Now, for the first time, you can see a forecast for waves on Lake Superior. The forecast goes out several days and it shows waves throughout the entire lake. When the waves are at the 2 foot level, the waves roll nicely on the point. At the 3 foot level the waves start to boom and crash. Notice that the color chart on the map is up to 18 feet high!!!

There is another map that shows the water temp. on Lake Superior. Notice the wide variation from one place on the lake to another.

To find the wave forecast and water temp., stay on the lodge web site and scroll down on the left side at the "Things To Do" list. Click on that and scroll down until you come to the line about Lake Superior Waves.

It’s that time of the year. The crunch of the leafs under foot and the crash of the waves out on the point. The air is fresh and it we can begin to feel the cool breezes moving in. Every season brings a different type of guest to the lodge and the ‘personality’ of the lodge changes. As we move into the fall season we get more people that like to go for a walk in the woods and then come back to the lodge, sit by the fire, watch the waves and read a book. We get small groups of women who come to the lodge for reunion or a moms getaway. We get families who want to stay in a cottage for Thanksgiving. The pace slows, the guests are relaxed and it is a time to relax and hang out.As we move toward winter it is going to be interesting to see what happens with the wildlife. This past summer many of our guests saw wolf down by Split Rock Lighthouse; something we do not normally see in the summer, with all the people around. While it is unusual to see the wolf this close to the lake in the summer, we are wondering... Read More »

Smore’s!   A few nights ago we had an interesting crowd at the campfire.  The people from Texas were here to escape the heat in the deep South, the couple from Colorado were here on a honeymoon, and most others were regulars.  Except for the people from the Middle Eastern country of Jordan.

It’s May and the phones are ringing.  After a tough fall and long winter, our guests are coming back!  And we are ready.

The Crossings Pub has a new feel with an incredible floor to ceiling painting that we think our guests will love  The Crossings will now have a more comfortable feel and some artwork that will interest everybody

We are also doing some work in the  building we call Mickey’s Fish House that is located near the campfire and overlooking the point. This is the original building that was the focus of the commercial fishing operation on the Cove Point property.  The porch on this building hangs over the water, and it is a great place to watch the sunset, yet few people use this space.  We think  the porch is not used  because  some think that the building is a cottage and that they should not intrude.  In fact the building is there for everyone to enjoy and soon it will be even better.  The outside deck will remain, and now the inside of the building, with it’s pot belly furnace will be the curiosity along with a general update of the interior to give it a cozy feel.  The space will remain rustic but at the same time it will be a great meeting place.   Guests will be able to use both the inside and outside of this great feature.  At times,  discussion groups, book clubs or families will want to use this cozy space as a getaway from the main lodge.

The north shore of Lake Superior has always been about beauty, nature and a value vacation.  With the abundance of state parks such as Gooseberry and  Split Rock Lighthouse, along with the Superior National Forest and of course Lake Superior, once you get here you can be as busy as you want with little or no added cost beyond lodging and food.  Ninety percent of the land around us is public land.  You can virtually walk to the Canadian border or Duluth or into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and never touch private land.  We have hundreds of miles of hiking, hundreds of lakes you can visit by car where you will likely not see another person all day!

Or you can stay at the lodge, sit out on the point and read a book, try out a kayak, swim in the pool, go for a bike ride to Split Rock, play Frisbee golf, or travel on our trail up to the Superior Hiking Trail and look for moose, bear or deer.  When you return, you can have a s’more at the evening campfire.

None of these activities involve extra cost.  Many miles of freedom in which to roam, and the pleasures of the lodge when you return, what a combination!
