During November 1905 a terrible storm blew across Lake Superior. Thirty ships with crew were lost and as a result, Congress agreed to fund the building of Split Rock Lighthouse. 2010 is the 100 year birthday for the lighthouse and the restored facilities are located only a couple of miles from Cove Point Lodge. Life on the North Shore this spring is bursting with activity as a result of a warm May and a moist June. The rivers are full to the brim, the water falls are spectacular and the vegetation, including pine tree growth is remarkable. Read More »

Twin baby moose, no ice this winter on Lake Superior, and an early spring are all creating an exciting time on the North Shore.

It has been a strange time up on the North Shore. We have not seen any ice on Lake Superior this winter, Spring arrived on about April 29 and we have been in the 40 degree range since that time.

Just in time for the holidays we are getting some snow. And the waves are crashing as we begin to see ice formations on the rock out on our point.

It would be great to sit in a cottage, by the fire, and watch the waves, ice and snow............and then take a snow shoe trip through our trails located adjacent to the lodge.

Now, for the first time, you can see a forecast for waves on Lake Superior. The forecast goes out several days and it shows waves throughout the entire lake. When the waves are at the 2 foot level, the waves roll nicely on the point. At the 3 foot level the waves start to boom and crash. Notice that the color chart on the map is up to 18 feet high!!!

It’s that time of the year. The crunch of the leafs under foot and the crash of the waves out on the point. The air is fresh and it we can begin to feel the cool breezes moving in.

Smore’s!   A few nights ago we had an interesting crowd at the campfire.  The people from Texas were here to escape the heat in the deep South, the couple from Colorado were here on a honeymoon, and most others were regulars.  Except for the people from the Middle Eastern country of Jordan.
