As of today, August 4, 2010, these numbers are the temperatures for the Gulf of Mexico (90) the St. Croix River between Wisconsin and Minnesota (77) and Lake Superior (66). In all cases these temperatures are higher than normal. Imagine being at the Gulf of Mexico where that land mass is warm in the first place and yet the water and swimming areas offer little relief.
At Cove Point Lodge we like to play a little game with the youngsters. We bet them that they can not hold there legs in the water, up to their knees, for more than 10 seconds. They all think they can; even when the water is 65 degrees. But try it out, and see what happens.
Remember, Lake Superior is our air conditioning system and when breezes blow off the lake and toward the lodge that creates cool and fresh air that you just can't find anywhere else.
What happens in the winter at the lodge? Lake Superior rarely freezes because the massive body of water stays right around 40 degrees. Again, when the breeze floats from the lake toward the lodge we in essence have a warming action. While several miles inland it might be below zero, at the lodge it might be in the 20 to 40 degree range.
